Kickstart Your Wedding Planning Journey

Here is a list of wedding planning questions I come across. And thought I would put together some answers to these questions to help in the process of taking off your wedding planning checklist.

How far in advance is best to start planning my wedding?

Planning a wedding can be daunting, and it's easy to feel overwhelmed by all the decisions that need to be made. One of the most essential things to consider is timing. You want to ensure you have enough time to plan everything without feeling rushed or stressed.

How far in advance should you start wedding planning?

The answer is that it depends on a few different factors. If you have a specific date, planning as early as possible is best to ensure all your preferred vendors and venues are available. Most experts recommend starting at least 12-18 months before your wedding date.

You may have a bit of leeway if you're more flexible on the date. However, remember that many wedding venues and vendors book up quickly, so starting your planning process early is still a good idea.

What do I need to consider when choosing my wedding dress?

Determine your style. Consider the type of clothes you usually wear, your favourite colours, and the overall aesthetic you want to achieve for your big day. This will help you narrow down the options and find a dream dress.

Wedding dresses can range in price from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Determine how much you are willing to add to your wedding budget for the dress and stick to that budget. Don't forget to factor in additional costs such as alterations, accessories, and taxes.

The venue and season of your wedding can play a significant role in determining the most appropriate wedding dress style. If you're getting married in a formal ballroom, you may want to consider a more traditional and elegant gown. A flowy, lightweight dress may be more fitting for a beach wedding.

Try on a variety of styles

Going into a bridal boutique with a specific wedding dress in mind can be tempting, but trying various styles to find the best fit for your body type and personal style is essential. Don't be afraid to add details to your wedding dress, like a beaded sash or lace sleeves, to make it more unique.

Trust your instincts

Ultimately, the most important thing is feeling confident and beautiful in your dress. Trust your instincts and choose the gown that makes you feel like the best version of yourself. Don't let outside opinions sway your decision – this is your special day, and you should wear the wedding dress that makes you happiest.

Share your choice with your wedding party. Once you've chosen your perfect dress, it's a good idea to let your bridal party know what style and colour you've chosen so they can coordinate their outfits accordingly.

Add alterations to your Wedding Planning Checklist. Once you choose your dress, add any modifications to your Wedding Planning Checklist. This will help you stay organized and ensure your dress fits perfectly on your wedding day.

Don't forget to add any necessary accessories. From shoes to jewellery to a veil, make sure to add any accessories required to your wedding dress to complete your bridal look. Ensure that the accessories you choose complement your wedding dress and overall wedding party aesthetic.

How do I choose my dream wedding venue?

Choosing the dream wedding venue is one of the most important decisions you'll make during the wedding planning process. After all, the venue will set the tone for your entire wedding day. Here are a few ideas to help you choose the perfect venue:

Consider your budget. Before looking at venues, clearly understanding how much you can afford to spend is essential. This will help you narrow your options and avoid falling in love with a venue out of your price range.

Think about your guest list. Make sure you choose a venue that comfortably accommodates your entire guest list. You don't want your guests to feel cramped or uncomfortable on your special day.

Consider the location. Consider the venue's location and whether it's easily accessible for your guests. You may also want to consider the availability of nearby hotels and transportation options.

Think about your wedding party style. Make sure the venue fits with the overall style and theme of your wedding. A barn or outdoor venue may be a good choice if you're going for a rustic vibe. A ballroom or elegant estate may be better if you want something more formal.

What should I include in my wedding budget?

Creating a wedding budget can be daunting, but ensuring you don't overspend on your big day is essential. Here are a few items you'll want to make sure to include in your budget:

Venue rental fee

Catering and bar expenses

Floral and décor costs

Photography and Videography

Music and entertainment

The wedding planner or coordinator

Attire for the wedding party

Wedding favours and other miscellaneous expenses

When creating your budget, prioritise the items that are most important to you. For example, if photography is a top priority, allocate more of your budget towards that expense. Also, don't forget to factor in any unexpected fees.

How do I create a wedding guest list?

Designing a wedding guest list can be tricky, but it's essential to ensure you have a detailed headcount for your wedding day. Here are ideas to help you create your guest list:

Start with your must-invite guests

List the people you cannot imagine getting married to without immediate family members and close friends.

Determine your venue capacity. Check with your wedding venue to see how many guests they can comfortably accommodate. This will help you determine how many guests you can invite.

Consider your budget. Remember that each guest adds to your overall wedding cost, so keep your budget in mind when creating your guest list.

Be selective with plus ones. Decide whether you want to allow guests to bring a plus one and if so, consider limiting it to serious partners or spouses only.

Use an online tool. Many online tools, such as The Knot's Guest List Manager, help you create and manage your guest list.

Remember that it's okay to be selective with your guest list and to prioritise inviting those most important to you.

If you want to make your wedding stand out, consider choosing a unique theme. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Enchanted Forest: Create a magical, fairytale-like atmosphere with lush greenery, twinkling lights, and rustic wood accents.

Vintage Glam: Combine vintage elements with modern touches for a glamorous, sophisticated wedding theme.

Beach Boho: Embrace the laid-back, bohemian vibe with a beach-inspired wedding theme with sand, shells, and driftwood accents.

Rustic Elegance: Combine rustic elements like wood and burlap with elegant touches like crystal chandeliers and gold accents.

Art Deco: Transport your guests back to the roaring 20s with an Art Deco-inspired wedding theme with geometric shapes, gold accents, and bold colours.

Remember to choose a wedding theme that reflects your personality and style as a couple.

How can I make sure my wedding day runs smoothly?

Logistics and timing are the last things you want to create stress about on your wedding day. Here are a few tips to help ensure that your wedding day runs smoothly:

Hire a wedding planner or coordinator. A wedding planner or coordinator can help take care of all the logistics on your big day, ensuring everything runs smoothly and according to plan.

Create a detailed timeline. Work with your planner or coordinator to create a clear timeline for your wedding day, including when each vendor will arrive and when each event will occur.

Communicate with your vendors. Communicate clearly with each vendor about your daily expectations, including arrival times and setup details.

Do a walkthrough. Before your wedding day, do a walkthrough of your venue to ensure everything is set up according to your plan.

Designate a point person to help with the wedding planning process. Choose a trusted friend or family member to be your point person on your wedding day, ensuring everything stays on track and runs smoothly.

By following these tips and taking the necessary steps for your wedding planning journey, you can help ensure your wedding day is a beautiful and stress-free experience for you and your guests.
